Economic Woes Bring Higher Suicide Rates
Before the financial crisis first began to bite three years ago, Greece had the lowest suicide rate in Europe at 2.8 per 100,000 inhabitants. It now has almost double that number, the highest on the continent, despite the stigma in a nation where the Orthodox church refuses funeral rights for those who take their lives. Attempted suicides have also increased. It's never just one thing, but almost always debts, joblessness, the fear of being fired are cited when people phone in to say they are contemplating ending their lives.

Testosterone Boosts Muscles But May Shorten Life
Testosterone therapy, in which testosterone is administered to men with low levels of the hormone, has been a controversial topic, with some advocating for the therapy as a way to restore vitality in older men, but others are concerned about the health conditions, such as heart problems and cancer, it may bring along.

Is 2012 Your Time To Die?
Catastrophe looms as toxic 13-tonne Mars probe falls to Earth. The heaviest interplanetary spacecraft ever launched is about to become one of the most dangerous man-made objects to fall from space when it crashes to the ground early in the new year. Russia's space agency, Roscosmos, said yesterday that the lorry-sized probe weighing 13.2 tonnes and laden with 11 tonnes of toxic rocket fuel and 10kg of radioactive cobalt-57 will fall to Earth between 6 and 19 January 2012.

"Even Frank Sinatra would be hard put to rival Sawicki when it comes to thoughts on lips and all they speak of. What he offers here is a company of quick reflections on lips and smiles and their many moods."-- Kirkus Indie

Telephone Consultations Increase Chances Of Death
More than 60 per cent of deaths of patients seeking medical care are linked with telephone blunders. The phone consultations are increasingly used instead of visits from family doctors because most family GPs have opted out of providing cover after office hours, with responsibility often handed to private companies. They use phone lines often staffed by clerical staff and nurses, who attempt to decide which are serious enough to warrant being referred to a doctor. Experts warned that the use of poorly trained staff to cut costs had left some playing "Russian roulette" with patients' lives.

Healthy Lungs Associated With Strong Gums
A new research suggests that maintaining periodontal health may contribute to a healthy respiratory system. The new study says that periodontal disease may increase the risk for respiratory infections, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pneumonia. These infections, which are caused when bacteria from the upper throat are inhaled into the lower respiratory tract, can be severely debilitating and are one of the leading causes of death.

No surprise when you realize that some of our longest living humans have lost all their teeth and they're not afflicted with gum infections. Pneumonia is one of the leading complications leading to death in seniors and gum infections further complicate the matter.

What You Eat Affects Your Offspring

Obese male mice tend to sire unhealthy offspring. And it seems diet is to blame, causing tiny changes in sperm that may lead to metabolic disorders in mouse pups. The discovery brings us closer to understanding how lifestyle choices affect the health of future generations. This is researched in the study of epigenetics.

The effects of diet and smoking become imprinted onto DNA via chemical modifications that regulate gene activity and protein production within a cell. Now it's been shown that mice brought up on a bad diet have offspring that are prone to insulin resistance, suggesting that epigenetic changes persist in some regions of sperm cells.

Calorie Restriction Keeps The Brain Young
Many studies suggest that obesity is bad for our brain, slows it down, causes early brain aging, making it susceptible to diseases typical of older people as the Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. In contrast, caloric restriction keeps the brain young.

Caloric restriction means the animals can only eat up to 70 percent of the food they consume normally, and is a known experimental way to extend life, as seen in many experimental models. Typically, caloric-restricted mice do not become obese and don't develop diabetes; moreover they show greater cognitive performance and memory, are less aggressive. Furthermore they do not develop, if not much later, Alzheimer's disease and with less severe symptoms than in overfed animals.
