FDA Orders Listerene To Stop Deceptive Advertising
The Federal Drug Administration has found Johnson & Johnson guilty of calling their Listerene Total Care Anticavity Mouthwash a drug since they state their advertising label claims to "Fights Unsightly Plaque Above the Gum Line" and "Prevents Cavities." These claims make Listerine Total Care Anticavity Mouthwash a drug as defined in section 201(g) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (Act) (21 U.S.C. § 321(g)) because the product is intended for use in preventing or mitigating disease, or to affect the structure or function of the body, by preventing cavities and removing plaque.
Maybe Johnson & Johnson should rinse themselves with their own Listerene product and follow the advice of U.S. researchers who say the need to clean a "lying mouth" or "dirty" hands is a real one. According to the journal Psychological Science study findings showed that those who lied on the phone -- leaving an untrue and malevolent voicemail -- felt a stronger desire for mouthwash and were willing to pay more for it than those who lied via e-mail. Bacteria from the mouth can easily get into the bloodstream once a woman's gums are bleeding. Gingivitis can increase the risk of preterm birth anywhere from twice to seven times, studies indicate.
