White Teeth Award
It takes “guts and smarts” to live to 100 and still feel well, says Dr. Walter Bortz, a scientific researcher, author, geriatrician and octogenarian marathon runner. Here's his four simple steps:
  1. Move more
  2. Engage life
  3. Self-care
  4. Don't fall for anti-aging hoaxes

This is an interesting comment I received. I'll let you decide if it should be awarded Black Tongue or White Teeth.

Why I Still Choose Toxic Mercury Silver Amalgam Dental Fillings
by T. M. K., Las Vegas, NV

There's No Right And Safe Filling Perfect For Every Person

Let's begin by saying we shouldn't get upset about my discussion on which dental fillings are better and safer, because this is more about me and my future and how I came to decide on what I think is my best investment for health and finances. I'm not trying to say that one dental filling is better that another or that there's only one way to look at the cost of dental fillings and which treatment is a better investment for health. There isn't one. I'm only presenting information I gleaned from my research that help me formulate some unpopular ideas that I'm now trying to share as alternatives to the prevailing sentiment in the natural health industry.

I believe there are many approaches to personal finances and that there are unlimited choices to healthy living. I never believe that my choice is the  right way or the only way for you too.

A more suitable, but too lengthy, title to this article would be: Why I Still Choose Toxic Mercury Silver Amalgam Dental Fillings Over Toxic Tooth Colored Plastic and Porcelain Bonded Fillings. And this is only my opinion, so don't expect me to try and convince you to agree with me, which I doubt you would considering many health nuts have been brainwashed with the ridiculous hype about how mercury in your dental fillings can turn you into a living dead walking zombie.

I've been unemployed for 16 months and money is tight right now. Unlike the Hollywood adventures of our two party presidential race with flip-flopping political posturing, my picture might not be changing soon. I'm 23 years old and have a couple small cavities in my wisdom teeth that need to be repaired. I have a dentist that I think very highly of and my parents trusted him to give me a couple small mercury fillings when I was a testosterone burning teen.

You see, this dentist is old; like he still has his "Howdy who?" puppet on a shelf in the dental office. My parents trusted his opinion and they are relatively healthier than average with his recommended mercury fillings. And my spunky 96 year old grandmother, one of his first patients, has never had a tooth pulled and, it looks to me like, all her back molars have dark fillings meaning toxic mercury silver amalgam. Granny doesn't take any meds and does her own style of Zumba with every daily glass of wine.

My old timer dentist must be doing something right, considering everyone in my family is healthy with mercury in their mouth. And let's not forget I'm scanning the pavement before me for nickels and quarters. Money and the best investment for my buck is what we're talking about, plus, my health isn't taking a back seat either

So, to give my internet natural health gurus the benefit of the doubt, I decided to visit a local cosmetic dentist for more information to help me with making an informed decision on whether to get more mercury fillings. To keep this simple, here's a brief outline of my experience comparing my family dentist with the cosmetic dentist down the street:

Cosmetic Dentist and His Opinions

1.) Friendly guy and staff with a clean office.

2.) Thinks I should have my wisdom teeth extracted.

3.) But if I choose to keep them, he can fix the cavities with white bonded porcelain fillings.

4.) The fillings are biocompatible and won't lead to mercury poisoning.
(Can't say my granny would agree with that poisoning theory.)

5.) Many industrial countries have already banned or limited the use of silver mercury fillings. They're trying to limit the environmental impact of mercury when these fillings are drilled out in the future or burned during cremation. The U.S. is somehow behind the curve here.

(This is what's going through my mind: I guess mercury/silver is pretty durable -- until death do us part -- if there's a problem during cremation. My old timer family dentist says some silver fillings can last 50 years of more. White fillings can't compete here.)

6.) The filling bonds and actually holds the tooth together, compared to silver fillings which are known to expand and crack teeth.

(My family dentist said that recent findings show the "holding tooth together" claim is not quite accurate, but more an exaggerated advertising ploy to sell more merchandise.)

7.) According to current research, the average life of a white filling is 7 years although he claims to have a couple white fillings in his mouth that are 15 years old.

(7 even 15 years doesn't win any trophies compared to the silver fillings in my family dental history.)

8.) They look very attractive. He shows me a video on his ipad of curvy, sexed up female models with white fillings.

(OK, he wins a star here. My tongue's wagging!)

9.) The cost is 40% more than what my old timer plans to charge me.

10.) They can get me an instant line of credit with low interest monthly payments. Would I like to start now?

(I'm looking for lost loose pocket change in the creases of this guy's dental chair.)

Old Timer Dentist and His Comments

1.) A little cranky today but still an OK guy with a clean office.

2.) Thinks extracting my wisdom teeth is silly. I'll need all the wisdom I can chew with to survive the coming hard times.

3.) And if I still choose to pull them he'll tell granny and I'll have to deal with her wrath.

4.) 40% of women are allergic to the metals in a mercury filling but there's been no sign of allergies in my family. (last time I looked I've still got a pair.) Not sure there actually is a true biocompatible filling. The human body doesn't like anything artificial touching it although there seems to be less of an immune response to porcelain, but there are may unanswered questions about how the body reacts to the bonding agent.

5.) When plastic/porcelain fillings were first introduced, they were labeled biocompatible and with time dentists discovered that wasn't totally accurate. Now the newer porcelain fillings are advertised as "more" biocompatible but you still have to bond them with a toxic glue that most would argue is not biocompatible.

In fact, in over 150 years very few amalgams have ever killed the nerve of a tooth but, it's pretty common for a tooth colored resin composite filling to kill the pulp nerve of a tooth because every chemical component of the white filling is toxic to the nerve and can kill it if not placed carefully.

Plus, porcelain tooth colored fillings aren't actually metal free biocompatible because their main component is aluminum oxide which could be a problem if you're allergic to aluminum.

(Hard to call this one. The porcelain is biocompatible but not the adhesive agent'? The bonding agent penetrates the tooth and can even kill the nerve if not completely cured? Sounds toxic and dangerous to me but not sure here.)

6.) With cosmetic white fillings, both the phosphoric acid that's dabbed onto the tooth to prepare the bonding surface and the bonding agent itself is toxic. Both can kill the nerve. Don't have that problem with mercury silver.

7.) Sure, mercury silver expands and creates cracks in the enamel, but your cavities are small pits and there is almost no chance of such a small amalgam filling putting enough stress into your tooth to cause it to crack.

8.) Yes, the dark silver color won't win any front page glamor shots, but your wisdom teeth are hidden in the dark back row of your oral theater.

9.) Yes, there is arguably some release of mercury into your blood stream, but haven't you read that you can detox heavy metals using all natural supplements? Here's a list of the top gun internet holistic doctors and the protocols and supplements they sell to detox mercury. Chow down on their supplements a week before getting these mercury fillings and continue afterwards as theses doctors appear to give a nearly 100% guarantee you'll be free of mercury if you buy and use their stuff:

Dr. Klinghardt Protocol...http://www.hbci.com/~wenonah/new/9steps.htm
Dr. Joseph Mercola...http://www.mercola.com/article/mercury/detox_protocol.htm

Gabriel Cousens, MD...http://www.life-enthusiast.com/index/Articles/Cousens
Dr. Isaac Eliaz, MD...http://www.econugenics.com/p-64-econugenics-toxin-removal-system.aspx

And if you're still skeptical about the effectiveness of detoxing mercury, read this article about a recent study showing chlorella suppressing the transfer of mercury to the fetus in pregnant mice:

Chlorella suppresses methylmercury transfer to the fetus in pregnant mice and prevents its accumulation in the mother's brain.

http://www.greenmedinfo.com/article/chlorella-suppresses-methylmercury-transfer-fetus-pregnant-mice-and-prevents-its-accumulatio

Plus, old silver mercury fillings might not be as toxic as many think. {http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/12/091209121206.htm}

10.) Did you know that there is a potential health risk with white fillings that virtually no one is talking about? Many of them have dangerously high levels of Bishpenol-A (BPA), a chemical resin used in many kinds of plastics, including some water bottles and metal food can liners. Emerging evidence suggests, that BPA can have harmful effects on human health, particularly child development. BPA mimics and disrupts estrogen hormonal balance and experts agree there is no safe level for BPA in the body. Canada has become the first country to declare BPA a toxic substance. You can read more about it at...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A

A major complication is that manufacturers of the dental materials and chemicals  used in white fillings are not required to disclose all of their ingredients. Moreover, many cosmetic white fillings have little-studied compounds such as triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) and urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) that may or not pose risks of their own.

Plus, white fillings and their bonding agents have other potential risks with exposure. Some scientists have worried about cytotoxicity (cell damage), genotoxicity (damage to cellular DNA), interference with cell metabolism, allergies, soft tissue reactions, mutagenicity (mutation-causing ability) and apop
tosis (provoking cellular self-destruction). {Bisphenol A Binds to the Local Anesthetic Receptor Site to Block the Human Cardiac Sodium Channel http://goo.gl/iD8we}

And the most serious issue is that I don't think there is a health food or supplement that can detox any of the toxic plastic components, including chemicals, that permeate the body through the tooth nerve-pulp blood circulatory system.

11.) Hey son, did you know that tooth decay is an infection and there isn't a filling made today that stops tooth decay dead, although mercury silver has the highest long term bactericidal properties inherent in its components? Not the case with white fillings. In fact, tooth colored fillings can actually seal into the tooth, decay contributing bacteria. It's called iatrogenic damage and check out this article: {http://www.dentistryhealth.com/spdrilling.html}.

Actually, if you would like to put off these fillings until you find a job, I can pretty much stop the decay process by treating your cavities with silver nitrate drops for $15 a tooth. The drops have been used in dentistry for over a hundred years and stop tooth decay infections stat. Could be good for several years. We'll monitor them at your 6 month cleaning checks. Does putting off your fillings sound like a deal to you?

And come to think of it son, the white fillings are even thought to feed tooth decay bacteria if not sealed carefully, kind'a like worms in dog poop.  But I can give you a white filling if you prefer. I'm just not going to talk you into white, considering you don't have a job.

(Wow! The cosmetic dentist never mentioned anything about stopping the decay infection. He seemed to be selling the beautiful looks; not too concerned with my financial position or the infection of tooth decay. He actually said that the faster I fill these cavities the sooner the tooth decay bugs will clear out of my mouth. Doesn't sound like a scientific way to treat an infection; cut them out with a drill, burn 'em with phosphoric acid, cover it up with super-glue-like-bond-o. Sounds like slash and burn medicine to me. Should I trust it?
)

12.) Oh yeah, my old timer takes cash only, but I save 40% over the cosmetic dentist's fees with a filling that's probably going to last me over 40 years, plus, fight tooth decay infection in the tooth. And I'm not too worried about mercury 'cause I can detox it with miracle supplements such as chlorella, zeolite, cilantro, glutathione, garlic, bentonite clay, DMSA, modified citrus pectin, and a hundred others that are sold on the internet. No can detox a white toxic filling with chemicals.

In Summary
And that's why, at this time of my life with no job and an economy that's broke, I still choose toxic mercury silver amalgam dental fillings over toxic white fillings. But if my finances change...yeah, I might want a cover girl look...or find me a cover girl.

"The guy in this blog has a point.  Even though mercury doesn't belong in your mouth, it is a substance found in nature that can be removed by natural means, but plastics aren't.  How do you remove the plastics once they have disrupted your hormones?  Just the tiniest amount makes you very sick and the levels in some of the resins are very high, not to mention that they use toxic bonding agents and the resins are so full of hidden chemicals that aren't disclosed, that you don't even know what could be making you sick.

I see people around with no teeth and they seem quite happy.  They don't have anything in their mouths leaching poisons all day.  They are generally bright eyed and spontaneous, whereas others with their dental work seem more driven and grouchy.

I understand that brushing and flossing are important, but why do you need a professional teeth cleaning?  They are going to use highly abrasive substances that contain fluoride to do that, which will just increase your loss of enamel and potentially lead to cavities.  I think the mouth is designed to be essentially self cleaning and there shouldn't be a team of specialists required to attend to it."

Slow Eating Associated With Slim People
One theory is that fast eating may be related to greater energy needs, since men and heavier people have higher energy needs than women. It takes time for your body to process fullness signals so slower eating may allow time for fullness to register in the brain before you've eaten too much.
