Your Teeth Reveal Where You Live

Voters say NO to fluoride!
The town of Amesbury, MA had been adding sodium fluoride to its water since 1967, but stopped in 2009, citing concerns that 40% of the material from new Chinese suppliers was not dissolving. Local health officials had recommended that fluoridation be resumed, but opponents said it was unnecessary.

Black Tongue Award
A dental hygienist accidentally cleaned the female patient's teeth with a chemical compound used to remove tartar and stains, according to an internal investigation conducted by the Department of Aging and Disability Services, which runs the state living centers. That solution, which is not intended for use in the mouth, is a 15 percent dilution of sulfamic acid and is used to clean dentures.

On October 31, a hygienist in the center's dental clinic noticed that a bottle of tartar and stain cleaner was leaking, so she poured it into an empty distilled water bottle, labeled it as "tartar and stain remover," and placed it underneath a sink, according to an internal investigation conducted by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, which runs the center. But someone apparently moved the bottle, then another employee mistook it for distilled water and poured it into the dental chair water bottle used for patients, the American-Statesman reported.

White Produce "May" Protect Against Stroke
Fruits and vegetables whose edible sections are white may lower your risk of stroke more than other fruits and vegetables, Dutch researchers report. Every 25 grams per day of white fruits and vegetables consumed led to a 9 percent decrease in the risk of stroke, and apples and pears were the most commonly consumed "white fruit."

Dental Hygiene Jobs Can't Fill Demand
CareerCast projects the number of dental hygienists in the United States at nearly 240,000 by 2018, a 36-percent increase over approximately 175,000 in 2008. More males needed in a  predominantly female career.

Root Canal Better Than Waterboarding For Confessing
...and it's NOT considered torture!

Today's political debates often include the question of whether waterboarding is torture and if it is an effective way to bring a prisoner to confess information. Maybe a national referendum would resolve the issue and I believe most U.S. citizens might argue they would rather be waterboarded than have a root canal. Problem solved; waterboarding doesn't sound that awful after all!

If waterboarding gives a person the feeling of asphyxiation by water, root canal with a rubber dam goes one step further -- you never know if the anesthetic is 100% effective or when it will quit on you. The fear is ever constant!

Unfortunately, our enemies haven't any experience with root canals to have developed a fear of one. I'm suggesting the CIA run a covert operation "deep root" to penetrate enemy territory with the fear of root canal. Root canal isn't considered torture... but the fear of one is enough to win co-operation.

"Even Frank Sinatra would be hard put to rival Sawicki when it comes to thoughts on lips and all they speak of. What he offers here is a company of quick reflections on lips and smiles and their many moods."-- Kirkus Indie

"Memory Of Longevity" Could Save Your Child
Long-lived worms can transmit their extended lifespan to the next generation by passing on changes in the way their genes are used, rather than differences in DNA itself. So far the "transgenerational epigenetic inheritance" trait has been seen to last only a few generations in worms, but many believe humans have the same potential.

Huskies Need Supplements To Detox Mercury
Alaskan huskies are an ideal model for humans as they are exposed to the same environmental hazards and have already been proven as an effective indicator of human ageing, immune function, toxicology, and cognitive disorders. A recent study demonstrated the risk posed by contaminants, such as mercury, in the subsistence diets that both indigenous people and huskies live on. As the mercury exposure increased, the antioxidant status of the huskies decreased.

City Life Can Break Your Hope For A Long Life
A growing body of research shows that babies born in cities, and children who grow up in them, face a battery of health problems that afflict both their physical and mental well-being. One theory — called biophilia — is that over millennia of evolution, humans have developed a natural affinity for green surroundings, and we become anxious when deprived of them.
According to researchers, the body burns more fat during the first four hours of sleep than it does during any other activity, including exercise. But foods rich in fructose, such as honey and dried fruits, may prolong the process if eaten before bed.
