People Who Lie May Crave Mouthwash

U.S. researchers say the need to clean a "lying mouth" or "dirty" hands is a real one. They found those who lied on the phone -- leaving an untrue and malevolent voicemail -- felt a stronger desire for mouthwash and were willing to pay more for it than those who lied via e-mail. However, those who lied on e-mail more highly valued hand sanitizer.

Dental Care Lowers Heart Disease Risk

Women who get dental care may lower their risk of heart disease and stroke by one-third, a U.S. researcher says. Timothy Brown of the University of California, Berkeley, says the study is the first to show general dental care in women leads to fewer heart attacks, strokes and other adverse cardiovascular outcomes.

Neanderthal Teeth Found

A team of Polish scientists said Monday they have discovered three Neanderthal teeth in a cave, a find they hope may shed light on how similar to modern humans our ancestors were. Neanderthal artifacts have been unearthed in Poland before. But the teeth are the first bodily Neanderthal remains found in the country, according to Mikolaj Urbanowski, an archaeologist with Szczecin University and the project's lead researcher.

New Hearing Aid Uses Your Tooth To Transmit Sound

Sonitus Medical has developed a new device, SoundBite, that uses the natural conduction of teeth and bone to transmit sound to the inner ear even after the outer and middle ear are damaged.
SoundBite sends audio by vibrating the teeth and jaw bone. Once in the mouth, the hearing aid is almost imperceptible.
SoundBite sends audio by mildly vibrating the teeth and jaw bone. Once it is in the mouth, the hearing aid is almost imperceptible.
SoundBite detects noise using a microphone placed in the ear connected to a transmitter in a behind-the-ear (BTE) device. The BTE transmits to an in-the-mouth (ITM) device that sends small sound waves through the jaw to the cochlea. There is no surgery needed, and both the BTE and ITM are easily removed to be charged inductively. Sonitus Medical is still preparing the SoundBite for eventual FDA trials for single sided, and (eventually) other forms of deafness.

Mother's Gum Disease Linked To Infant's Death

Scientists from Case Western University made the discovery after a 35-year-old California woman contacted them to help investigate the death of her baby. Earlier studies by the same researchers showed that an oral bacteria called Fusobacterium nucleatum could spread from the bloodstream to the placenta in mice. The woman wanted to know if it was possible in humans.

Painless Dental Drill With Plasma Jet

Firing low temperature plasma beams at dentin - the fibrous tooth structure underneath the enamel coating - was found to reduce the amount of dental bacteria by up to 10,000-fold. The findings could mean plasma technology is used to remove infected tissue in tooth cavities - a practice that conventionally involves drilling into the tooth.

Broke A Tooth? Grow Another!

Dr. Huang regenerated two major human tooth components—dental pulp and dentin—for the first time in a mouse experimental model. The mouse was used to supply nutrition for human tissue regeneration. Using tissue engineering, researchers saw empty root canal space fill with pulp-like tissue with ample blood supplies. Dentin-like tissue regrew on the dentinal wall. “The finding will revolutionize endodontic and dental clinical practice by helping to preserve teeth,” Dr. Huang says.”

Cut The "Slosh" To Dance Like A Tai Chi Master

The sloshing of liquid in a cylindrical container, like a mug, is similar to the motion of a pendulum. This gives an intuitive explanation of why coffee spills and researchers have found that noise—potentially caused by uneven steps or small jerks of the cup — plays an important role in amplifying the natural oscillations of coffee into a full-blown spill. Staying focused makes it less likely a walker will spill his coffee.

Read the book Yin Ain't Yang, An Ancient Way To Better Health, if you want to keep your teeth and jaws from sloshing up your martial arts.
