White Teeth Award
The 41-year-old recovering drug addict was one of 46 people who received free dental work by dentists Dr. C Ross Crapo, Dr. Nathan Muirhead and Dr. Ngan Huynh in Crapo's Saanich practice. Staff at Rock Bay Landing woke everyone up and told them about the free dental service, even paying for their cabs to get there. At the end of the day, the three dentists had performed work worth $21,961.
Black Tongue Award
To investigate the dental industry, CHOICE sent a shadow shopper, X-rays in hand, to 14 dentists across Sydney for a check-up only, no cleaning. What they found was widespread evidence of over-servicing.
The shadow shopper was disillusioned by the whole experience. After visiting the first two dentists, she remarked she’d never again agree to any dental work without getting a second opinion. After visiting 14, and getting almost as many different opinions, she realized even a second opinion might not count for much.
Tooth Meditation With HIIT - Part 3
This is my third post on Tooth Meditation With High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT).After reading my past posts you would know my feeling that the parasympathetic nervous system should be activated during longevity exercise with HIIT. Remember this training is intense and to adjust it for longevity you have to temper it with mental work. At various times during the training session your teeth should be lightly touching, the tip of the tongue touches your roof of mouth behind the upper front teeth and you're breathing through the nose. You'll know your on the right track if you can feel your lips or cheeks relax into a jello-jiggle during the brief times of parasympathetic activation.
You can incorporate more mental work into your training by focusing on your thumbs. The opposable thumb has helped the human species develop more accurate fine motor skills and, according the Chinese Meridian theory, the fine motor skills of the hand directly enhance brain function. Follow these tips to enhance fitness, brain power, and longevity.
The exterior tip of the thumb is the endpoint for the lung meridian which runs on the inside of the arm beginning at the third intercostal space. The Lung meridian is the "Master of Respiration", therefore its acupuncture points are used for health of the lung, respiratory system and heart.
The lung meridian also represents the oxygen content of the body. It controls the exterior of the body and all the Yin-Meridians. It's reactions are most sensitive to harmful external influences (such as wind). Discords of the lung normally relate to a lack of Yin.
The Lung meridian has a close relationship with the meridians of the heart and circulatory system. It runs through the diaphragm and connects with the Large Intestines in the abdomen. A disturbance in the lungs can cause a disturbance in the abdomen (in Stomach, Liver, Gallbladder, Bladder, Pancreas) and in the pelvis area (Intestines, Kidneys, Prostate) and vice versa.
According to Ayurvedic Theory the hands have a power of their own which can help a person control his life. There is a tremendous flow of energy in our hands and each finger represents one of the five elements – the thumb is agni (fire), the forefinger is vayu (air), the middle finger is akash (ether), the ring finger is prithvi (earth) and the little finger is jal (water). The roots of all diseases lie in an imbalance of one of the five elements and can be corrected with herbal medicines, will power and Mudras.
In Western Medicine the lungs and heart are the two prime indicators of health and longevity. Studies have shown that the easiest way to predict a person's lifespan is to test lung function. Increase your lung function and you'll live longer. Focus on your thumbs during HIIT and the energy flow to the lungs and heart will move toward balance hopefully increasing your lifespan.
Advanced Technique Breathing Through Nose And Thumbs is thoroughly discussed in the book Yin Ain't Yang, The Ancient Way To Better Health.

Mental Illness Affects 24% Of Americans
Mental illnesses -- led by anxiety disorders and depression -- now affect one-quarter of the US population according to new research. In Europe a similar proportion -- about 27 percent -- suffers from these same illnesses, a second new study concludes.
"Gentling" Traumatized Cats
PhD student Nadine Gourkow is looking into a technique known as "gentling", where cats receive petting that mimics allorubbing and allogrooming (rubbing or grooming by another cat) in short and repetitive sessions to change their emotional state from negative to positive.

"Even Frank Sinatra would be hard put to rival Sawicki when it comes to thoughts on lips and all they speak of. What he offers here is a company of quick reflections on lips and smiles and their many moods."-- Kirkus Indie |
Scientists Use Breath & Sweat To Find Trapped Humans
This is the first scientific study on sensing systems that could detect trapped people. The development of a portable detection device based on metabolites of breath, sweat and skin could hold several advantages over current techniques. A device could be used in the field without laboratory support. It could monitor signs of life for prolonged periods and be deployed in large numbers, as opposed to a handful of dogs working, at risk to themselves and their handlers, for 20 minutes before needing extensive rest.
The drugs under review include Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva and Reclast. This class of drugs has been linked to osteonecrosis of the jaw, or jaw bone death, and a possible higher cancer risk.
Australian researchers published the latest report to hint that elderly women who take bisphosphonates - as the bone drugs are known -- live longer than those who don't get treatment. Out of every hundred women in their study, three who were not taking bone drugs died every year, compared to less than one of those who were on the drugs.
Although the findings don't prove the bone drugs actually boost longevity -- it's possible that women on treatment are generally healthier, for instance -- they fit with earlier studies.

The RFU considered making headgear mandatory, but an Australian study in 2009 concluded that padded headgear did not reduce the rate of head injury and may make the situation worse: children think they are safe, so are more aggressive, which is the case in American Football.
Solar Storm Could Cause Widespread Nuclear Meltdowns
In a huge solar storm back in 1859, telegraph offices worldwide were hit, some telegraph operators reported electric shocks, the telegraph systems malfunctioned and even paper caught fire. It's the strongest solar storm on record -- and is called the “Carrington Event” -- which is named after Richard Carrington, who viewed and reported on the solar flare of Sept. 1, 1859. Now, flash forward: In 1989, six million people in Quebec, Canada were left without power for several hours when a solar storm took down a power grid.
With solar activity expected to peak around 2013, the Sun is entering a particularly active time and big flares like the recent one will likely be common during the next few years.
