Women comprise 50% of new dental class at Indiana University
By DrBicuspid Staff
August 19, 2011 -- For the first time in the 132-year history of the Indiana University (IU) School of Dentistry, the newest doctor of dental surgery (DDS) class is composed of an equal number of men and women: 52 men and 52 women.

On August 13, 104 students from 17 states and four nations gathered in Indianapolis to take the professional oath of dentistry and to receive a white coat that will serve as a symbol of professionalism for them throughout their careers in healthcare. The dental school established the ceremony in 2001 as a means of underscoring the importance of ethics and professionalism in dentistry for students at the outset of their dental studies.

Although substantial numbers of women have populated IU's dental classes for the past generation, this wasn't always the case. Between 1879 and 1974, more than 5,000 men and just 56 women earned dental degrees from IU and its predecessor, the Indiana Dental College.

The women in the incoming 2011 class, the DDS Class of 2015, include a pair of sisters -- Marisa and Taylor Kendra o f Highland, IN -- and 2010's Miss Indiana USA, Allison Biehle, of North Vernon, IN.

FITNESS FOR YOUR TEETH – WHO’D A THOUGHT!
Edited by Teresa Mullen Frease and Jean Blauvelt

Fitness training for your teeth!?!? This, coupled with intention, is incorporated into a brand new approach to fitness and health. Intended Evolution Fitness, or I-Fit 150, is a new scientifically-based, revolutionary approach to health and fitness. It combines exercises from the Eastern traditional health arts with the power of “Intention” and the mind.

Dr. Dongxun Zhang, founder of FIT-150, is a doctor of Oriental medicine and Acupuncture, as well as a renowned Qigong and Tai Chi Master. His theory of Intended Evolution contends that conscious intention actively shapes your health. He believes the mind is very powerful and if used along with physical exercise, this power can generate great benefits for your health and longevity.

Many people have limiting beliefs about aging. However, Fit-150 believes the mind has the power to actually realign cellular memory so that we can no longer be negatively impacted by these limiting beliefs about aging. FIT-150 teaches us to break out of these beliefs and to create the life and health that is our birthright!

For multiple generations our teeth and jaws have been degenerating. This is largely due to the quality and types of food the mass population consumes. Teeth are no longer challenged and used in as many different ways as in the past. Dr Zhang believes food today is largely processed and hence does not provide the necessary challenge to the teeth and jaws to keep them strong and healthy. He believes this degeneration of the jaw and related muscles may also affect other areas close by such as the nose and eyes.

Dental health is also very important for digestion and related functions. It is a very important part of the health of the whole body.

FIT-150 recommends that to maintain optimal dental health, some challenge is necessary to the teeth and jaws to function more in line with their original purpose. This is the “Use it or lose it theory”. FIT-150 teaches exercises for the teeth and jaws and how to create a “blueprint” to keep them healthy and strong.

This is designed to keep them strong all the way to the grand age of 150 years old!! …If you plan to live that long. Positively planning to “live that long” is exactly what Fit-150 recommends you do!

Learning how to establish a blueprint for the health of your teeth is similar to building a foundation to support a 10-story building. Even if the actual building ends up being only 4-stories, we know the foundation built for 10-stories will easily support this. Regardless if you live to 80, 100 or 150, FIT-150 creates a blueprint for your teeth to be healthy throughout your entire life.

FIT-150 not only addresses dental health but goes beyond this to provide cardiovascular and flexibility training. It integrates specific exercises, techniques and intentions for increased bone density, hormonal balance, lymph circulation, organ detoxification, brain function, sexual health and overall happiness of the mind, body and spirit.

Exercise your mind and teeth and live happily all the way to 150 as you enjoy the health and vitality of all aspects of your body’s functioning!

Fit-150 - Intended Evolution is based in Austin, TX and has classes at several U.S. cities.

Beer Boosts Long Distance Runners Health
Long-distance runners who consume a liter of non-alcoholic wheat beer a day may help reduce inflammation and upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) according to a new study published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and unusual book on the role of the teeth in physical combat., August 19, 2011

This review is from: Teeth In Mortal Combat: How To Unleash Your Basic Instinct For Survival (Paperback)
In all my years of training in the martial arts and the hundreds of books I have read and reviewed, this is the first book I have ever read which dealt with the use of the teeth as a specific combat method. There have been books which may have briefly mentioned biting for self-defense, but this text focuses specifically with the use of the teeth as a combat weapon. Of course, we all have read incidents where someone has used their teeth as a weapon in sport situations like football, wrestling and boxing. However, in most cases, biting is considered a barbaric act.

The writer, who is a dentist and a martial artist, makes some interesting observations about what he calls the use of the teeth in mortal combat. This paperback edition is organized into four parts.

Part one explains the original chi, how the teeth are our most primitive weapons of choice, it also explains various ways the teeth are used and other basic information on the teeth and jaw.

Part two deals with the tongue, teeth, passive and active factors, the Yin and Yang of chewing, digestion and other topics.

Part three covers the Buddha tooth, the teeth and tongue of life and death.

The final part goes into various exercises on how to relax and teeth and jaw training methods.

In conclusion this is a book for anyone who may be interested in the role that teeth might play in real life and death street combat and survival.

Two Step CPR To Staying Alive

Hands-Only CPR is performed with chest compressions but without the mouth-to-mouth breathing done in conventional CPR. In recent years, the American Heart Association has simplified the procedure to two steps. When you see an adult suddenly collapse who is not breathing normally:

1. Call 9-1-1

2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest at the rate of 100 pumps per minute (like the beat of the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" song)

Begin CPR as soon as possible after the sudden cardiac arrest because the risk of permanent damage to the victim is greater after four minutes. Continue CPR until an automated external defibrillator (AED) or emergency worker arrives.
