Black Tongue Award
Ever wonder why your tongue stains black after days binging on the bean? It's not just the black color of the bean. Coffee is acidic and drinking it all day for weeks on can alter the bacterial population of the mouth and tongue. Some of these bacteria are dark colored and if allowed to grow into a nasty hairy patch they can turn the tongue stinky black.

It's important to know that caffeine is an addictive drug. Among its many actions, it operates using the same mechanisms that amphetamines, cocaine, and heroin use to stimulate the brain. Relatively speaking, caffeine's effects are milder than amphetamines, cocaine and heroin, but it is manipulating the same channels in the brain, and that is one of the things that gives caffeine its addictive qualities. If you feel like you cannot function without it and must consume it every day, then you may be addicted to caffeine.

Why do so many people consume so much caffeine? Why does caffeine wake you up? By understanding the drug's actions inside the body you can see why people use it so much.
If you'd like to learn more about coffee, it's strong addictive nature and lesser health benefits go to this link: The Coffee Illusion.

University Of North Texas Goes Vegan
The University of North Texas in Denton, known for its jazz program and hipster vibe, has opened an all-vegan full-service campus cafeteria that it and animal-rights activists say appears to be the first in the nation. Another innovation is the use of plates instead of standard-issue cafeteria trays, which cut both waste and water usage by 40 percent, Botts said. That change is being considered at some of UNT's other four dining halls.

Build A Solar Bottle Light Bulb
Millions of the poorest people in the Philippines live without electricity. Isang Litrong Liwanag (A Liter of Light), is a sustainable lighting project which aims to bring the eco-friendly Solar Bottle Bulb to disprivileged communities nationwide. Designed and developed by students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Solar Bottle Bulb is based on the principles of Appropriate Technologies — a concept that provides simple and easily replicable technologies that address basic needs in developing communities.

Yellowing Eye Lens Behind Sleep Disorders?
Yellowing of the eye lens that absorbs blue light may be causing sleep disorders among the elderly, says a study. Blue light is a portion of the visible-light spectrum that influences the normal sleep cycle by triggering release of melatonin in the brain. Melatonin helps signal when it is time to be sleepy or alert. Normal yellowing of the aging lens may interfere with absorption of blue light.

The Brain's Fountain Of Youth
Dracula may have had it right: Young blood can restore an aging body. Scientists have discovered that blood from a 3-month-old mouse can coax the brain of an older mouse into making new brain cells. Previous research has shown that giving young blood to older mice boosts their immune system and muscle function.

"Even Frank Sinatra would be hard put to rival Sawicki when it comes to thoughts on lips and all they speak of. What he offers here is a company of quick reflections on lips and smiles and their many moods."-- Kirkus Indie

Mind Altering Bugs In Your Gut
Anew study suggests that gut bacteria can mess with the mind, altering brain chemistry and changing mood and behavior. The findings open up very exciting speculation about using probiotics, the good bacteria in yogurt, to treat mood disorders in people.

Furious To Conquer Aging Beyond 100
A life span of 1,000 may be optimistic but an average span of 150 years seems well within reach in the near future, with most of those years being vital and productive. Scientists are working furiously to make it possible for human beings to achieve Methuselah-like life spans. They are studying the aging process itself and experimenting with ways to slow it down by way of diet, drugs and genetic therapy. They are also working on new ways to replace worn-out organs—and even to help the body to rebuild itself. The gerontologist and scientific provocateur Aubrey de Grey claims that the first humans to live for 1,000 years may already have been born. And what percentage of the world's population will be able to afford the financial costs involved with extending life?

Forensic Bitemark Analysis Can Ruin Lives
ABFO, American Board of Forensic Odontology

David C. Averill, DDS, D-ABFO
My blog will examine a specialty of the forensic sciences called forensic odontology. Forensic odontology deals with dentistry as it relates to the law.  Bitemark analysis is just one of the areas that a forensic odontologist may practice.  My blog will educate the reader with information concerning the controversial subject of  bitemark analysis.
The purpose of my blog is to improve bitemark analysis through social media publishing. It is hopeful that a greater understanding of the problems will invoke proper changes to prevent the wrongful conviction and imprisonment of an individual while the actual perpetrator is allowed to remain free.

Intermittent Fasting Similar To Calorie Restriction For Health
Forget the fountain of youth or anti-aging potions, the secret to extending youth is all in what you eat or don’t eat. Intermittent fasting combined with exercise can actually reverse the aging process in your muscle and brain tissue! If a younger, rejuvenated body and mind interest you, than intermittent fasting is a lifestyle worth investigating. Simple calorie restriction has long been known to increase life span, but it is unpleasant. Daily calorie restriction is closely associated with depressed mood and irritation (Roky, et al., 2000), but there is an alternative. Intermittent fasting (IF) has been shown to have all the same benefits as simple calorie restriction, but without the unpleasant feeling of deprivation and depressed mood.

Fall for Smiles

Join Us as we Fall for Smiles!

A recent survey from Oral Health America, Plackers dental flossers, and Oral Healthcare Can’t Wait found that in the past year, more than one-third (35%) of those who regularly visit the dentist have cut back. Though this finding tracks with the fears and realities of our current economy, routine dental visits play a vital role in preventing oral and systemic disease and keeping future healthcare costs down. This finding is one of the many reasons why on September 1, Oral Health America launched the second annual Fall for Smiles® campaign that aims to remind policymakers and the public about the importance of dental self-care, regular dental visits, healthy food choices, and avoiding tobacco products. Fall for Smiles runs through the end of October.

Beginning in September, we’ll Fall for Smiles and encourage families to talk about oral health—and we hope you will join us! There are many ways that you can participate in Fall for Smiles. By supporting this year’s promotion, you will encourage families to include oral health in their back-to-school and Fall routines, leading to a lifetime of healthy smiles.
