Yoga unites the three treasures of Tai Chi -- Beauty, Love, Spirit -- however, joining the upper and lower teeth is the simplest path to understanding.

Pick up any current book or magazine that features fitness advice and you'll certainly read about "HIIT" high intensity interval training. Since the late 1990's clinical studies of well conditioned athletes showed that HIIT is the most effective type of cardiovascular exercise that improves performance, especially when one can't overcome a plateau in training. "Wind sprints" are the most common exercise used with high intensity interval training.

Personal trainers today are recommending HIIT for the general public as a tool for fat burning and achieving higher levels of fitness. And although the HIIT regimen is proven to improve performance for many athletes as well as the casual fitness enthusiast, it has not been proven to increase longevity or maintain health. More research has to be done here.

Unless you are a competitive athlete trying to improve performance you might want to give more thought to the intensity of your sprints. What level of exertion would give best results for longevity? And if you believe in "no pain no gain" with maximum intensity then it might be that, according to the Cialdini's consistency principle, you could be having a difficult time changing your old belief system because humans have a built in tendency to keep thoughts and beliefs consistent with what has already been done or decided.

As an example, I haven't been a competitive athlete since high school and it's taken me over 40 years to overcome my questionable belief system that extremely hard exercise benefits me. That's why I'm concerned that people in general may fall into the same trap I did of taking HIIT into the realm of extreme exercise rather than adapt it for longevity.

And if you're not sure whether you're exercise is too extreme for longevity then visit this link to see what "exhaustion" can do for you: "Exhausted But So Happy"

Most of my research points to the fact that today's high tech generation would benefit more by incorporating a slightly higher value of parasympathetic over sympathetic nervous system activity when health maintenance and longevity is the goal. Parasympathetic state includes "rest and digest" and is the main function engaged during recovery and meditation. Much of humanity today is stressed out and lacking enough parasympathetic activity to stay in homeostatic relaxed balance. That's why I'm suggesting a sprinkle of parasympathetic spice into your wind sprint high intensity interval training.

The easiest triggers for parasympathetic stimulation is intended relaxation and swallowing saliva. The vagus nerve (tenth cranial nerve) is one of the most important parasympathetic nerves originating in the brain and it travels to all the major organs. It has a connection with the tongue and is a key player in the swallow/gag reflex. When you intentionally swallow the vagus is activated which in turn switches on a signal that stimulates the entire relax-digest system network in the body. If you're interested in longevity then relaxation and satisfaction with life should become a natural part of your existence.

It's been scientifically shown that the vagus nerve:
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Activates stem cells that help regenerate organs
  • Increases heart function
  • Boosts immunity
  • Reduces stress

Martial Arts Training Takes The Silk Road
Silk cloth was and still is a centerpiece in the ancient martial arts of China. Used for uniforms, weapons and decorative items silk is found everywhere in the fighting world of kung fu. Genghis Khan once issued all his horsemen with silk vests as an arrow hitting silk does not break, meaning you can tease it out. As it is, the Chinese had a good reason to incorporate silk into the physically demanding life of the warrior with his many breaks and bruises. Spider webs have been used in folk medicine to cover wounds, perhaps due to the fact they are high in vitamin K which helps with blood clotting.

A study at the University of Bologna, Italy has shown that silk has healing properties probably due to its moisture absorbing qualities. Silk is made from silkworms that feed on mulberries which have high antioxidant properties that support cellular repair. It is 100% natural hypoallergenic and processing it into cloth preserves many amino acids in common with the human body. Some dentists and dental laboratory technicians use because it is highly tear-resistant. Its low thickness and good flexibility, adapts perfectly to tooth cusps and fossae and is extremely precise when adjusting the tooth anatomy. My book Teeth In Mortal Combat has a chapter on how to use silk in martial arts exercise for teeth and jaw strengthening. I'm not sure if Guinness World Record holder Seema Bhadoria uses a silk cloth in her demonstration of teeth pulling strength but good oral hygiene must certainly be part of her training.

White Teeth Award:
British Medical Journal recommends that bicycle helmets not be mandatory. Most accidents are due to road conditions and wearing helmets did not reduce accidents but compulsory bicycle helmets did decrease riding activity. Cyclists on-average live longer than non-cyclists as long as good common safety sense is used while riding.

Black Tongue Award:
Medical Journal of Australia published an article by Professor Joseph Proletto claiming that obese people have no choice but resort to medication and bariatric surgery for long term weight loss. He claims that environmental factors during the a person's time in the womb and early childhood can throw hormonal switches that permanently protect a physiologic benchmark for obesity.

I would suggest that one stretch the mind beyond aggressive cutting and drug medication as promoted by much of conventional Western medicine. There is an evolving alternative science that believes the mind can influence healing on a cellular level permanently and delicately. Investigate cutting edge mind technologies such as a Fit-150 Intended Evolution Class that teach how to use the mind (the strongest tool) for health, longevity and weight loss.
