Iceland Should Be In The News, But Isn't.
Americans may remember that at the start of the 2008 financial crisis, Iceland literally went bankrupt. In the March 2010 referendum, 93% voted against repayment of the debt. The IMF immediately froze its loan. But the revolution (though not televised in the United States), would not be intimidated. With the support of a furious citizenry, the government launched civil and penal investigations into those responsible for the financial crisis. Interpol put out an international arrest warrant for the ex-president of Kaupthing, Sigurdur Einarsson, as the other bankers implicated in the crash fled the country. That small country stated loud and clear that the people are sovereign.

Radiation worries for children is firing up in the dental profession. Not only do many dentists continue to use outmoded x-ray film requiring higher amounts of radiation, but orthodontists and other specialists are embracing a new scanning device that emits significantly more radiation than conventional methods. Designed for dental offices, the device, called a cone-beam CT scanner, provides brilliant 3-D images of teeth, roots, jaw and even skull. Some dentists, however, are saying that the cone-beam is 100's times more dangerous than an airport scanner. Because children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to radiation, doctors three years ago mounted a national campaign to protect them by reducing diagnostic radiation to only those levels seen as absolutely necessary.
Young patients who are typically 5 to 10 times more sensitive than adults may be falling for slick marketing campaigns that help pay for the dentists' $200,000 machines. Anxious to pay off their debt, some dentists offer coupons for free scans to get referrals and may be taking unnecessary x-rays. The American Association of Endodontists issued a joint statement saying that cone-beam CT “must not” be used “for screening purposes in the absence of clinical signs and symptoms.”

Researchers Plan To Grow Human Heart
While these advances are exciting and hold great hope for the future it is evident they are still at the early stages of research.
Many hurdles will have to be passed before we can perhaps use scaffolds from cadavers or pig hearts to build human hearts for transplantation. But what this marks is the future of treatment of cardiovascular issues.
