Chinese Doctors Call For "Cruel" Bear Farms To Close. China’s bear farms, where for decades bile has been extracted from the endangered animals in horrific conditions, have been condemned by eminent Chinese scientists. Experts say there is no justification for the farms because their latest research has shown that that herbal substitutes have greater health benefits than those claimed for bear bile which is used in traditional Chinese medicine.
Black Tongue Award
New details of unethical U.S. medical experiments in Guatemala in the 1940s have revealed that a dying woman was reinfected with syphilis. The experiments nearly 70 years ago are already considered one of the darkest periods in U.S. medical research history. Researchers who experimented on disabled American citizens and prison inmates in the name of medical advancement also infected a dying woman with syphilis in order to test whether penicillin could prevent infections.
Elephant Gets Root Canal

"Even Frank Sinatra would be hard put to rival Sawicki when it comes to thoughts on lips and all they speak of. What he offers here is a company of quick reflections on lips and smiles and their many moods."-- Kirkus Indie |

Dangerous Free Radicals Necessary For Health
Elevating free radical levels in the hypothalamus directly or indirectly suppresses appetite in obese mice by activating satiety-promoting melanocortin neurons. Free radicals, however, are also thought to drive the aging process. It's a "Catch 22" in that on one hand, you must have these critical signaling molecules to stop eating. On the other hand, if exposed to them chronically, free radicals damage cells and promote aging.
Bounce Back Your Brain With A Green Break
Like a muscle, our brains appear to get fatigued after working for sustained periods of time, particularly if we have to concentrate intensely or deal with a repetitive task. Taking in the sights and sounds of nature appears to be especially beneficial for our minds. People who don't live in or near a nature-filled environment may not be out of luck but a quieter city street with interesting natural elements to look at, such as containers of plants, could do the trick.
Pressurized Egg Scrambling For Athletes
Ever since last year's U.S. Open, Djokovic has been trying to improve his fitness by climbing into a rare $75,000 egg-shaped, bobsled-sized pressure chamber. The machine, which is made by a California-based company called CVAC Systems and hasn't been banned by any sports governing bodies, is one of only 20 in the world. Unlike the increasingly trendy $5,000 hyperbaric chambers many professional athletes use to saturate the blood with oxygen and stimulate healing, the CVAC is a considerably more-ambitious contraption. It uses a computer-controlled valve and a vacuum pump to simulate high altitude and compress the muscles at rhythmic intervals.
Stone Age Diet Can Help You Stop Aging
Early man lived off a diet free of grains and dairy products. When we are young, our bodies are probably better able to cope with modern diets. But as we age, we would be better suited to a caveman diet.
Basketball and baseball are the two biggest mouth-injuring sports and the most common injuries are broken, displaced or knocked out teeth, and broken jaws. It might be wise for parents to keep less talented kids away from these sports rather than try and protect them with body armor mouth guards and helmets. The National Youth Sports Safety Foundation estimates that more than 3 million teeth will be knocked out in youth sporting activities this year.
White Fruits Keep Stroke At Bay
The color of the edible portion of fruits and vegetables reflects the presence of beneficial phytochemicals such as carotenoids and flavonoids. Each 25 gram per day increase in white fruits and vegetable consumption was associated with a 9 percent lower risk of stroke. An average apple is 120 grams.
