Yoga unites the three treasures of Tai Chi -- Beauty, Love, Spirit -- however, joining the upper and lower teeth is the simplest path to understanding.

Thanks to WFAA-TV Dallas/Fort Worth for exposing possible Dentist Medicaid Abuse.

A News 8 investigation finds that some dentists want that Medicaid business so badly, they hire recruiters to bring in patients. Medicaid parents are regularly solicited by dentists offering free stuff — such as iPods, zoo tickets, and electric toothbrushes — if they take their kids to certain dentists. It is a little-seen side of Medicaid dentistry, a $1.5 billion business in Texas, where, statistics show, welfare and unregulated free enterprise come together like nowhere else in the United States.

"Texas is the epicenter of a disaster of Medicaid dental," said Houston attorney Jim Moriarty, who is suing one chain of dental clinics for mistreating children under Medicaid. The Texas Dental Practice act says it is "illegal to pay ... directly or indirectly ... for securing or soliciting a patient for a dental clinic."

Proof that some flu drugs "fool around" with your brain.

Amantadine (uh-MAN'-tah-deen), an inexpensive generic, was approved for the flu in the mid-1960s. The first inkling that it might have other uses came a few years later when it was found to have an effect on the brain's dopamine system, whose many functions include movement and alertness. With no proven remedies to rely on, doctors have used a variety of medicines approved for other ailments in the hopes that they would help patients. Those decisions are based on "hunches and logic rather than data.

"Even Frank Sinatra would be hard put to rival Sawicki when it comes to thoughts on lips and all they speak of. What he offers here is a company of quick reflections on lips and smiles and their many moods."-- Kirkus Indie

The Myth Of The 8 Hour Sleep
Woman awake

We often worry about lying awake in the middle of the night - but it could be good for you. A growing body of evidence from both science and history suggests that the eight-hour sleep may be unnatural.

The Planet's Oldest Toothache
The unfortunate Labidosaurus had lost the two teeth at the front of the jaw first, and oral bacteria had become trapped inside the jaw when the damaged tooth roots were covered by bone. Things only got worse from there. The bacteria triggered a severe bone infection, leading to the loss of three teeth and irreversible damage in the inflamed, pus-oozing portion of the jaw.

A line drawing of the skull of Labidosaurus (top), and a close-up of the lower jaw designated CMNH 76876 showing two missing teeth (tp1, tp3) and an abscess. From Reisz et al., 2011.

Tooth Fairy Beats Wall Street Predictions
Some people might look to the Dow Jones industrial average or the state of local business to figure out where the economy is headed, but a poll released this week indicates they need look no further than their kids' bedrooms. More specifically, under their children's pillows. That is because, according to the Original Tooth Fairy Poll, the average gift from the Tooth Fairy in the past year was $2.10, down 42 cents from the previous year.

Laughing Away Dental Fears
About 50 percent of adults suffer some degree of dental fear and about 5 percent have severe dental fear. Even so, most people with dental fear go to the dentist regularly. Swedish researchers have found that important factors in managing stress during a dental visit include optimism on the part of the patient and an atmosphere of humor in a patient's interaction with the dental staff.

Bad Breath Molecule May Be Good For You
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), the bad breath molecule, was shown to be a product of bacteria and fungi in the early twentieth century. Moreover, it was known to have profound effects on human physiology long before that. The effects of H2S on cells, studied using H2S donors, are variable and dose dependent. Lower (micromolar) levels are generally cytoprotective, with protection often ascribed to a reduction or neutralization of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.

In the Journal Of Breath Research researchers showed that hydrogen sulfate (H2S) increased the ability of adult stem cells to differentiate into hepatic (liver) cells, furthering their reputation as a reliable source for future liver-cell therapy. This is the first time that liver cells have been produced from human dental pulp and, even more impressively, have been produced in high numbers of high purity.

Trust Your Gut Feelings And Know Your Subject
New research coming out of Columbia claims people who trust their feelings are more likely to make accurate predictions than those who don't. The researchers are calling this the "emotional oracle effect." What it really means is that a gut feeling serves as an intuitive summary of all our accumulated knowledge on a topic, and that summary is apparently better than what we could come up with if we tried to consciously synthesize this information.

T. Rex's Bite Was A Real Monster
The tyrant lizard, also known as Tyrannosaurus rex, had the strongest bite of any known land animal, new research suggests. The force exerted at one of T. rex's back teeth would have been between 7,868 and 12,814 pounds-force. This force would be akin to having a medium-size elephant sit on you.

Read my book, Teeth In Mortal Combat, How To Unleash Your Basic Instinct To Survive, and learn more about the way your bite works to keep you alive. Available at Amazon.

Chocolate Boosts Your Brain Function
Regular consumption of high-flavanol chocolate, could help to promote brain performance by boosting the efficiency of certain brain functions, suggests new research supported by Barry Callebaut.

Undertaker Steals Gold Crowns
A man who was working as an embalmer says he stole from the dead in order to support his family. Adrian Kline, 43, of Brighton, is accused of removing gold crowns from the teeth of dead people and then selling them at pawn shops. Families rarely request the precious metals from their deceased loved ones because the payoff from the amount of work to extract or find the gold crowns is very little.
